A Week…

What a week we have had with our girl! In the day to day routine of daily life, I forget about adoption related issues, until something happens to remind me… this last week, I have been reminded several times that our little girl spent the first few years of her life in an institution, and that while she was there she developed certain “institutional behaviors.” The list of possible behaviors is a long one, but one that we see often in our little M is that when she is in pain, it does not occur to her to tell anyone…

Last Friday, when I picked little M up from school, I noticed that she was putting her hand over her little ear, and when I asked her if she was ok, she said no, that her ear hurt.

When I looked at her little ear, I saw that it was bleeding, and that quite a bit of blood was pooled in the opening of her ear.
So I told her we were going to the doctor, and she said that was probably a good idea. Ummm, yeah.

So off we went… most doctors feel a little uncomfortable digging around in her little ear, since the canal is so small. The bleeding was stopped, and we were given antibiotics (just in case), and we went home.

Later in the evening, after we had eaten dinner, she was sitting in the husband’s lap, and her ear started bleeding again, this time profusely, and running out of the ear.
We packed her up, and the husband took her to the emergency room. This was our first experience in the emergency room with a chid…apparently, blood coming out of the head gets you seen right away, ha!

Her ENT was called to consult with, and it was determined (since they were still not able to see much), that the flanged tube in that ear was possibly creating a problem. She was sent home on steroids, and her ear continued to bleed throughout the weekend. Um, can we say stressful!?

On Tuesday we went back to see her ENT, and the swelling had gone down a bit, but they were still unable to see the flanged tube inside. What they could see, though, is a hole in her eardrum. Gah!
We are keeping her on steroid drops, and we will see the ENT this week, when hopefully, we will find that the hole has healed, or is healing, itself. At least this is not her hearing ear!

What are we going to do with our girl? We have told her that when her ear hurts, she has to tell someone, and the nurse will call me, and I will come and pick her up. Her response was “do you think there are books for me to read in the nurse’s office while I wait?”
You know what will happen, right? If her ear hurts, she will of course tell someone!
But if something else hurts…it will not occur to her.

Even through it all, all the pain, all the prodding, and digging around in her ear…our girl has never complained. She’s never cried, and never questioned…she’s just gone along with the flow.

She smiled, and laughed through it all, and she made me laugh often.
At the first doctor’s office we were at on Friday, little M took off her shoes, climbed up on the table and laid down and made herself comfortable. She said “mommy, I wish there was a blanket, you know?”
Then, when the doctor came in and said hello to her. She said “I have an owie ear, and it’s blooding all over!” The doctor asked about her heart (of course) and when I rattled off all the acronyms pertaining to her heart, he asked me what some of them stood for. Little M said “hmmm. mommy, I think he’s just practicing being a doctor. Maybe he just needs more practice.” I smiled right through my embarrassment, and we carried on.

Oh, little M…

It's such a hard, hard thing to teach our little ones. Hope Little M feels better soon and everything is on the mend.
